    I bet someone here knows: When designing a track with two separate split track sections, is there a minimum number of shared elements between the two sections before Stunts counts them as separate? Or can you just go straight from the merging section into the splitting section for the next one? #NoReason #Februari

    As far as I know, you can merge and in the following tile split again, but I'm not sure at all.

    Maybe Bliss will issue some warning if there is something wrong in that design, although not every situation is covered by the possible prognoses (but the majority of common use are).

    Bliss assumes what I think is most likely. If I had created Stunts' engine, I would've followed the sequence of tiles one is driving on. Upon reaching a split, I would check on which of the two connecting tiles the racer moves to and immediately determine a path has been chosen. If, however, the racer moves to a tile that's disconnected from the split, then I'd assume the same as when you go off road by a straightway: I'd give a certain tolerance, but take you as still within the same path. I don't know what Stunts would do if you move from a tile before the split directly to a tile after the split. I guess that'd confuse the engine very much.

    Yeah, this seems to be pretty much how it works. Splits can be positioned right after mergers. The one "weird" thing is that for the two pieces of road you need to follow at the beginning and end of a path split and merger pieces don't count. So say I first split into path 1 and path 2-3, then 2 and 3 split, 2 and 3 come together and then they come together with 1. Now I follow 1 for the first two road pieces and shortcut to 2. I land on the last normal piece of 2, then I drive over the merger with 3, then another normal roadpiece, then the merger with 1, that's not a valid shortcut, I get penalty time. I need to hit two road pieces back to back either in path 2 before the 2-3 merger or in path 2-3 after that merger.

    Uhm... I would like to see this graphically. I think I understand it, but when I reproduce it, it looks obvious to me that it wouldn't work, so something I must be misinterpreting. We could start a forum thread about track split analysis. It'd be very interesting. Bliss is not perfect in estimating which path the opponent will take and it only makes OWOOT calculations, so it's unable to estimate penalty times too. It'd be great to learn more about how it works and eventually incorporate that into the code.

    Never mind. I tried reconstructing the effect in a simpler test setup and now it seems to just count the merging piece as a piece of track. The track version where I encountered the effect was pretty complicated, I had to make some adjustments to elements that should be legal just to get it to work, so there were probably several elements coming together to confuse the program.

    Hello again everyone, dreadnaut here. Have you been well? Recovered from the holidays? The new season starts next week with a track by Akoss Poo, but first, let's have a look at the year just over.

    Jaguar in December

    Where were we? Oh yes: it was mid December and we were racing on ZCT209, CTG's return to track design: a fast Jaguar track with several patience-testing tricks. The track was interesting but the race fairly linear, with FinRok back for the season's end, Duplode, and CTG himself at the top.

    The podium solidified at the end of November, and the fight moved lower down along the scoreboard, with small packs of racers aiming for the non-decimal points. I enjoyed a good battle with Seeker1982, with Akoss Poo coming up really close behind.

    So congratulations to the three at the top, all ZakStunts champions in previous years! But they'll have to keep an eye on the three pipsquaks near their tail-lights: they might have some interest in the next championship ;-)

    Summing up the season

    Following the example of our 2018 season, the year also came to a close shortly after. I don't know who won the year 2018, but let me tell you all about the 18th ZakStunts season!

    Starting straight at the top: ZakStunts champion for 2018 is Duplode. This is his fifth title in ten years, and the walls of his house must be very sturdy, because they hold up 95 medals. Although his total score of 139 is not one of the highest, it's important to note that it was achieved with several "last-minute" replays, which became almost a tradition.

    When in Brazil it's 11:45 of the final day of the race, and Duplode hasn't posted his replay yet... :cheesy:

    This strategy however left tons of leading-time points for other drivers. CTG collected most of them, climbing the season scoreboard at great speed in the second half of the year! But some of those LTB points also ended up in Seeker's pockets, who secured the second place by one point.

    Third place in the season goes then to CTG; an impressive result since he took part in only 7 out of 12 races. But with 11 LTB points, there's an extra podium step there!

    Just below

    A bit lower on the scoreboard—skipping that strange chap in fourth place—we find afullo and Cas, who reached good positions consistently through-out the season. No medals for them this year, but the podium steps are definitely within their reach.

    FinRok, the 2017 champion, took most of the season off, but landing on the podium everytime he appeared, gathering just enough points to step ahead of Alan Rotoi. Alan has a been a bit to the side in the past years, but seeing his recent good results, and if he can make enough time for racing, there will be one more strong contender on the tracks.

    And let's not forget the return of Akoss Poo! Oh my, we might have a really challenging season in 2019!

    Teams!

    The team trophy travels to Italy, with the victory by Rolling Stunts. That's me and afullo most of the time, in case you wondered. Our results were OK, but being there month after month made the difference, leaving us a comfortable 15 points lead ahead of Cork's Crew. They were catching up fast though, after Overdrijf's strong return last autumn.

    Slowdrive takes the third place with the hard work by Cas and Leo, who not only managed to race on all tracks, but also designed most of them—thank you guys!

    Also back on the radar is Looping Warriors: not many points this season, but they might reach triple digits in 2019.

    Side scoreboards

    With new drivers sometimes taking part in only a handful of races, the newbie season if often difficult to read. Not this time! The newbie champion for 2018 is Seeker1982, with a perfect score! Second place goes to GTAMan15, and in third position we have Swotl. Their performances have been more irregular, but I'm looking forward to seeing them on the tracks this year!

    There's not really a scoreboard for GAR results—and that's by design—but you don't need that to realise that Seeker scored another perfect! on this competition as well. I have to say, with Marco away from the tracks that might be easier, but Seeker's laps have been consistently impressive.

    My first computer was a 386DX 60MHz with 4M RAM and a 120M hard drive running DOS 5.0. Unfortunately, I no longer have that computer, but I do still have my second computer (stored): a Cyrix 486DX4 100MHz. Stan, 486 microprocessors have a built-in 387 co-processor. And yes, the best for running classic games is a classic computer. Yet, DOSBox does a very decent job, I have to admit.

    Race start (and result publication at the end) are not automated. The only parts of Zakstunts you can set your watch to are the deadline and the countdown to it. The race usually starts somewhere during the day. In this particular case Dreadnaut may or may not also be waiting for a little bit of feedback on last night's post.

    Even if you use the lowest graphic settings, remember to leave "Fast simulation speed" on. It will be easier to drive, and you will be faster. settings.png

    I can see that the competition is always at the top. To be honest i have received a message by by Afullo regarding the possibility to create an italian team with you. I love the idea but I could never leave my great friend Leo alone and first of all I don't think that i can still race at my best ... I can just for fun as this evening.

    @FinRok: When I did the superkart I made the whole dash from scratch, except I think I probably used some sort of template for the meters. That dash looks surprisingly good, even today, but it's not very detailed. It misses all the little shades around every little corner in the dash. The steering wheel lacks sophisticated shading. This works well for the kart, karts and simplicity go together very well. It was also the only way to sell the look of a kart, no standard dashboard would have done. For the DTM cars I was looking for a different look though, a light carbon or plastic dash with a bunch of switches and stuff, a racing setup. And that look could really use all the little details and shades and stuff I'm not as good at creating. So I decided to start from an existing steering wheel setup that looked most like what I was imagining. I did do a completely custom gearbox and knob, I redid the meters to match the performance of these cars, I "carboned" the whole background of the dash, and I created several custom elements for among the switches and stuff that serve to make them look like racing cars. Most of this stuff is shared between the three DTM machines, but I felt that helped give them a single identity. For the paint-jobs I first did some historical team paint-jobs, starting with the factory teams as paint-job 1. I also gave each car at least one paint-job that looks more like a civilian German luxury vehicle, as well as a bright green paint-job, because that's my personal favorite Stunts car color. The other jobs are basically me trying to see what other patterns I could make with the polygons I had (I started out having plans for at least two completely different patterns on the same car, but that was too complex, with the exception of the Mercedes because the primary job is so simple. Speaking of the Mercedes, (found here: Stunts goes Dtm that's also the only one where I seem to have done a proper non-light blue paint-job. So uhmmm... sorry? I have no plans to redo the dash. I like the result honestly, despite the copying being obvious. As for the paint-jobs, well, the 3D model can be freely switched out without impacting either performance or recognition by the server (the same is not true for the dashboard, the size of the gearbox changes performance) so I could so a 1.2 update I suppose...

    I tell you what: if you or anyone else makes a nice paint-job for any of these cars (using Stressed, the same tool used for making new models, info on the forum or the wiki), drop the car with that extra paint-job in the forum thread (still here: Stunts goes Dtm then other people can use them as well. You can use anything you change about their look in the competition, similar to how there's an alternate paint-job pack for the Indy around. (I think? there might be a minor problem with the software trying to identify your vehicle if you use a paint-job number higher than it knows the car has?) Just don't change the shape if you want to be able to do GAR racing, but color patterns should be no problem.

    About GAR, as I am new to the community I do not know exactly the rules, I just understood that it must be a clean lap and without replay handling. As I posted time on the last track and nobody reported me anything, I posted it the same way. I find it interesting to post the rules clearly.

    Gar is explained in this video I did. I did only a mistake removing the replay bar during the Replay check ... Heretic, Gar requires to check the video replay to see if your car exited the track or did something wrong. Usually if you are not winning the race by 10 seconds faster than the others no one check it.

    Hi Smrtka, check my video below. Shortcuts , voluntary speed up , replay handling and exit the track are not allowed . If jumping on a banked road speed up the car this is not avoidable , so it's considered valid because it s not possible to demonstrate the voluntary of the action. While you cannot jump from corkscrew or it the wall of the divided road to speedup ... Check the video to see all the rules. Dreadnaut, can you include the video in the site ?

    GAR – GENTLEMEN AGREEMENT RULES 1) REPLAY HANDLING NOT ALLOWED : Lap must be run from start to end without any stop and especially without use the Replay Handling. 2) NO SHORTCUTS - FOLLOW THE YELLOW LINE : At least one pixel of the car must be always on, over or in contact with the road surface. This means that if you finished out of the track, your lap is not valid. The “Road surface” is considered to be only the grey part of the track so that bumps or side walls on the ramp etc. are not valid . Not important if you gain or you lose an advantage by that. 3) REPLAY CHECK : To establish the validity of the lap and that no shortcuts have occured, at the end of your run, it is necessary to check the replay with a fixed cam from the roof of the car. So, in the replay mode, press : F3 , then press 3 CTRL+RightArrow and 10 times CTRL+UpArrow. You must see a view from the roof of your car (with the back of the car pointing at the bottom of your screen and the front of the car pointing at the up part of your screen. NOTE: (In the rules video that I did , I wrongly removed the Replay bar by pressing the R button during the replay check … don’t do that because this can change the result of the check) 4) SPECIAL ELEMENTS : They must be run as they are without cutting them or using them to speedup. 4.a) Divided Highways : don’t it the inside wall to jump and speedup. 4.b) Corkscrew : Enter and exit the corkscrew following the yellow line without jumping, cutting or trying to speedup 4.c) Loop : perform the loop as it is without cutting. 4.d) Slalom Paved Road : If you pass through the “ghost” wall bug, is NOT valid. 4.e) Half Pipe : enter and exit the Half Pipe without try to speedup. 5) SPECIAL CONDITION : Unvoluntary speed-up entering or exiting banked road or random bug Jumps are considered valid. As gentlemen agreement , you must apologize for the lucky condition as tennis players do hitting the net. 6) RECORD THE VIDEO : Not Mandatory but, if you are very fast, It’s a good behavior to always record the video of your run on Dosbox by pressing “ctrl+alt F5” so that, if asked by some racers, you can demonstrate to have not tricked with the RH…. But here we are all honest racers. 7) Check the Gar rules video for more details and examples

    Okay, fait enough. I guess since I modeled the outside so closely to real cars the same could be expected from the interiors. I couldn't find a lot of good interior shots to go off though, and I assumed it would look nothing like the consumer model. I had also fictionalized the performance by quite a bit. The specs are closer to the current DTM cars than to the early 90's ones (because to me Stunts feels best when you can pretend the mph are actually kph, the elements feel smaller than they are, so I want lots of speed) and the overall in car experience, things like handling, was more modeled after the general spirit of touring car racing and what I sort of imagine it feels like than actual hard numbers. The simple steering wheel made sense for that feel, the racing machine two steps detached from anything road going. Looking back a bit more differentiation between the cars might have been nice, but then again even the approach I used already led to so many tiny details I noticed looked wrong and went back in to fix, three times... So yeah, feel free to explain this a little further to me in the DTM thread on the forum. I enjoy learning about these things, both the general how to model a car and the specific how to recognize the steering wheel of an Audi. But I'm not making any promises on doing anything about it, because I like the current look, and it turns out dashboards like this are quite a lot of work to do even sort of right.

    Sometimes it happens, and I don't know why; when it comes, I simply reopen the replay and rerun its last few seconds, this usually suffices to fix the problem. Penalty time is given by the game when you cut some parts of the track.

    I don't know exactly, but a 286 with a 12MHz CPU might have some limitations preventing Stunts to be played at full speed. I think dreadnaut (and probably also someone else) knows more.

    You can try setting the game to slow simulation speed and trying to load it then? A replay doesn't actually remember where your car went, only the input you gave. Change anything that changes how that's used (game version, car parameters, simylation speed) and it stops making sense.

    UHM :huh?: Hi Stan, surely the 286 was too slow for Stunts Vga . To play the championship here, I use DosBox but when I play for fun , I use original hardware too. More to the point i use a 486 dx2 but i have almost all the dos machines from 8086 to Pentium. Do You lose a minute from 286 to 486 ?!?!? The only reason could be that the inside clock of the game is not affected by the speed of the Pc while the game it is. So the clock moves normally while you are driving in slow motion due to the 286. This sounds strange to me but it would be possible.

    I remember having played Stunts on a 286 in MCGA/VGA mode. It was playable, but not smooth. On my 386DX 60MHz at that time, Stunts would run just fine even at top detail. Anything better than that should be perfect.

The problem is: whith short race whit 486SX I make 2.35.20 whith long race whith 286 12Mhz 3.43 I can't load replay long race on scoreboard WHY? the time is too long becouse I run more race?     Aside from the mentioned limitations, if the main problem is that the uploader says that your lap ends with a crash, you can likely fix it by reopening the replay and rerunning its last few seconds, as already said; after you will be able to upload it, it will be possible to see whether it is affected by the half/full speed thing. As far as I remember, I was able to run fine Stunts on a 486DX 33MHz in the mid-90s.

    I solve problem:the clock of 286 is different and olso whith audi a8 I don' make batter; however for a slow machine is decent time.Don't charge .rpl becouse the time is not more short becouse this 286 is more slow. I can't make better time becouse my self repaired 286 is slow.I can made same funny track for Lancia Delta and I practice mi drive skill (is good )I love terrain and snow road I can modifly terrain and turn around mountain and jump up and down muntain!!!!!! Next track I start from zero and I think work!! I discovery I can't make superfast time becouse my clock is slowww incredible I thinked I don't drive too fast!!!!!

    You know what would be kind of cool? If you looked up a track in the archives, and the winning line would be projected onto the map. There isn't really any position data in a replay as far as I know, so you'd need like a simulator to make the image, and it would still look weird because the map elements don't translate exactly to a top down view of the actual tracks. But it would be kind of cool. :cheesy:

    Indeed, that'd look amazing :smiley: And about the RPLs, yes, on a slow machine, there will be fewer ticks per second than maximum and I bet ZakStunts assumes maximum (just like Bliss does too). The replay cannot be converted to a different clock, but its length can be calculated by multiplication against the clock ticks. Am I right?

    Ah, now I know why Stan sees it smooth. I used to have Stunts 1.0 and it's the one I tried on a 286. That version can't change the clock speed, so on slow computers, it becomes sluggish. Only replays for 1.1 store the clock byte.

    Sorry but ... depending on how you set the Dosbox speed, could this affect the performance too as for different dos machines ? I tried but it seems to me that the clock is always the same at slow and fast dosbox speed

    Stan's replays are driven with Stunts 1.1, but he has set the game to use the slow simulation speed. ZakStunts can handle those replays, no problem there. As I mentioned before, he should try to keep the graphic details low, but switch to fast simulation. settings.png

    Marco, I think that, maybe unless you set some extremal values for the speed, the clock measures the time in the same way.

    I had been playing with the clock byte a few years ago. At that time, I thought Stunts always stored the same byte there. But when I changed it, I can choose any number of clocks and Stunts will take the input sequence (what's contained in the body of the replay file) at the requested pace. When played in Stunts, you can make cars run super fast. Of course, I imagine the FAST/SLOW simulation menu option only sets one of two values, but in reality, any integer is valid.
